What are some good, haunting or inspirational pieces of classical music?
I’m trying to find classical music similar to Mendelssohn’s “violin concerto in e minor”, Tchaikovsky’s “marche slave”, Chopin’s “waltz in a minor”, pieces that are haunting or inspirational, as opposed to just ambient, non-themed music.
I’m asking for actual music from the past, not movie soundtracks (which are good).
There’s so many to name! I can’t possibly list all of them here without breaking my computer down, but a few you could try are:
Liszt’s Un Sospiro
Ravel’s Gaspard de la Nuit is very lush. It’s ambient, but it does have its own themes.
the third movement of Rachmaninoff’s Symphony No. 2 (there’s this certain section in there that boasts one of the most beautiful sounds ever created)
Rimsky-Korsakov’s Russian Easter Overture or Tchaikovsky’s 1812 Overture
Brahms’s Romance Op. 118 No. 5: reminds me all the time of falling in love
Like the person above, try Vaughan Williams’s Fantasia on a Theme by Thomas Tallis; another great one of his is The Lark Ascending.
If you want haunting, try Rachmaninoff’s Prelude Op. 32 No. 10. Mussorgsky’s A Night on Bald Mountain is haunting to the point of being a little scary (it’s supposed to be describing a witch’s sabbath).
