Necessary guitar instruction?
Hi, I’ve been learning from Hal Leonard Guitar Method, getting ready for book 3. much of book 1 and 2 teach reading music, like notes played on guitar, sharps, etc.
some of my friends just learn by themselves. they pick to a song they like, and then just apply the TABS and strum.
whats the advantage of learning melody, and disadvantage of just doing tabs?
The difference with tabs is that you are learning by ear and memorization. I compare Tabs to playing by ear. Not that its not good but in your case, you are combining both and if you need to really advance over the years, you need to fall back on theory. With that in mind, you can expand easier because you can read music and once you get into modes and scales, yours sense of improvisation will improve over time.
I would suggest a very good book since you are already on the 3rd book of Hal Leonard. Get Berklee guitar book volume 1. This book will put you to the test as to whether the HL book 1-2-3 were worthwhile.
Then , move on to Book 2 and Book 3. Once you have mastered these 3 books from Berklee, you will be considered quite advance and able to actually do what you want with the fingerboard. The rest is EXPERIENCE which you earn over time and through playing gigs.
